THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team split a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday with Nicholls, winning the opening game, 8-6, before dropping the second game, 4-3, in 11 innings at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

Rhett Rosevear turned in a pair of multi-hit performances, one of three in the opening game for Southeastern (24-27, 14-10 SLC).

SLU splits doubleheader, earns Southland Tournament host site

SLU finished the regular season one game behind eventual conference champion McNeese and will serve as a host site for bracket play in the Southland tournament. Nicholls (25-22, 12-12 SLC) draws the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

GAME ONE – SLU 8, Nicholls 6

A solo home run in the bottom of the first put the Colonels up early, adding another run in the third.

Southeastern rallied to tie the game in the fourth. Evan Keller drew a leadoff walk. After Rosevear singled to right field, Keller stole third base. Preston Faulkner drove an RBI double to right-center, plating Keller. Rosevear scored on Shea Thomas’ groundout to short.

Nicholls responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, regaining the lead.

The Lions batted around in the seventh, scoring five runs. Christian Garcia reached on a one-out, infield single and advanced to second when the throw from the shortstop sailed out of play. Garcia scored on Bryce Grizzaffi’s RBI single through the left side.

Grizzaffi stole second and Keller drew his third walk of the game. Rosevear brought home Grizzaffi with an RBI single, chasing Colonel starting pitcher Tyler Theriot. Keller and Rosevear pulled off a double steal before reliever Chase Gearing walked Tyler Finke to load the bases.

Faulkner was hit by a pitch, driving in Keller. Rosevear and Finke scored when Thomas’ chopper up the middle was mishandled by the shortstop.

Garcia added to the Lions’ lead with a solo homer leading off the eighth, but Nicholls responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Hayden Robb (4-3) earned the win, allowing a pair of runs in three innings of relief work. Gage Trahan earned his 10th save of the season, working a scoreless ninth. Theriot (7-4), the conference leader in wins, suffered the loss. He surrendered six runs – five earned – in 6.2 innings pitched.

Garcia (3-for-5), Faulkner (2-for-4) and Rosevear (2-for-5) all produced multiple hits for the Lions.

GAME TWO – Nicholls 4, SLU 3 (11 innings)

The Colonels took another early lead. SLU starting pitcher Andrew Landry walked the bases loaded before hitting a batter to force in a run.

Southeastern took the lead in the fourth. Tyler Finke led off the inning with a single to center field before Colonel starting pitcher Nico Saltaformaggio hit Preston Faulkner with a pitch. Both runners advanced into scoring position on Thomas’ groundout to short.

Finke scored on a wild pitch and Faulkner scored on Pierce Leavengood’s RBI single to right.

Andrew Landry held Nicholls to one run through six innings, retiring the final eight batters he faced, but the Colonels regained the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh off reliever Hunter O’Toole.

SLU rallied in the ninth to tie the game. Garcia drew a one-out walk, advancing to second when Grizzaffi’s chopper to third was misplayed. Nick Ray reached on a fielder’s choice as Grizzaffi was erased at second, sending Garcia to third.

Ray advanced to second on a wild pitch, putting a pair in scoring position. The Colonels opted to issue Keller an intentional walk to load the bases before reliever Josh Mancuso walked pinch-hitter Champ Artigues to force in the tying run.

Nicholls scored the winning run in the 11th on a single to right off reliever Daniel Dugas (3-2).

Nick Heckman (2-5) earned the win, logging 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Dugas suffered the loss, allowing one run in 3.1 innings pitched.
