HAMMOND, La. – With the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the horizon, Southeastern Louisiana University’s Kristian Jackson will take center stage in the women’s discus Saturday at 4:05 p.m. CT at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Jackson, out of Zachary, Louisiana, punched her ticket to the national championships back on May 28 at the NCAA East Regional Qualifiers in Bloomington, Indiana. The senior bombed a school record in the discus of 176-8 (53.86m) on her second attempt.
While Jackson’s emotions were running high during the qualifiers, she’s taking a more relaxed approach heading into the weekend.
“The preparation (for nationals) hasn’t changed much but my mentality has,” said Jackson. “Now that I’ve made it, I feel like I can relax a little bit and go out there, throw far and have fun.”
The newly crowned All-American, Jackson will seek to add to her outdoor resume. The Zachary High School grad won the Southland Conference Outdoor Championship in the discus while finishing second in the hammer and shot put. As a result, Jackson was tabbed the Southland Conference Outdoor Female Outstanding Field Performer.
Jackson acknowledged her journey from ZHS to where she’s at now and the difficulties that came with it.
“From where I started it was rough,” said Jackson “It took a lot of hard work and passion and I’m glad it paid off because I got through it to make it this far. I’m very happy and excited about the goals I have met this year.”
