TRACK & FIELD: Lions Head to Commerce with Championships, Qualifications on Mind

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team is searching for championships and bids to the NCAA East Regional this weekend at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which runs May 4th-6th in Commerce, Texas at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Commerce and will be streamed on ESPN+.

On the women's side, the Lady Lions have had some of the top leaders in field competition for most of the season. Kristian Jackson has the Southland's longest throws in the discus and shot put this season where she's also in line to qualify for the NCAA East Regional in both disciplines. In shot put, her best throw this year is nearly a full meter ahead of the competition while in discus, her best toss is nearly 10 full meters better than any other SLC competitor.

Also entering the conference championships at the top of the SLC standings is Katrine Olsen, whose performance in the high jump from the Pelican Relays has her atop the conference at 1.76 meters (5'9.25"), looking to fend off stiff competition for the SLC Title in that discipline. Another Southeastern contender in the field will be Lara Zupanc, whose performance in pole vault currently has her fourth in the conference standings.

On the track, SLU will be looking for top performances from Esther Nwanze, Indya Jackson, and Alexandra Cleveland. Nwanze has top times in the middle distance and hurdles for the Lady Lions while Jackson falls right behind her in those same disciplines. Cleveland will be looking to achieve some of the best times in the sprints for Southeastern.

The Southeastern men will have plenty of opportunities for top marks on the track with Jaimie and Eugene Omalla holding down the sprints while Javon-Taye Williams and Noah Kiprotich take part in the mid-distances. Omri Shiff and Olu Ogunyemi will man the hurdles competition, looking for golds. The Omalla brothers, Agerian Jackson, and Shiff will also compete in the relays as one of the top teams in the 4x400-meter relay.

In the field, Slavko Stevic will look to make history again as he tries to break his own record mark in the high jump to secure conference gold as he is well placed to earn a spot beyond the conference meet. His 2.22-meter (7'3.25") high jump at the Strawberry Relays broke the SLU school record and currently has him third in all of NCAA Division I coming into the weekend.

Terrell Webb has the conference's best throw in the hammer throw competition this spring by nearly three meters and he will look to secure his spot in the NCAA Regionals in that discipline this weekend while trying to earn a conference championship in that discipline.

Thomas Nedow will look to put up some of his best marks as he tries to secure a medal in the shot put and discus competitions over the course of the weekend.

"We're excited for the competition," said SLU head track & field coach Michael Rheams. "We've got a lot of athletes in good position heading into this meet and we feel like we will put up good marks all weekend long. We want to show that we're in our best form not just for this weekend, but looking to get as many athletes as possible qualified for the Regionals."

The 2023 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships run May 4th-6th at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas. The meet will be live streamed on ESPN+ with live results available as well.
